How many times have you daydreamed about time traveling? How would it work? How do you get to the time or place? How do you get back? How would you be able to experience a time without standing out and disrupting the present or future? As a kid, my imagination would run wild with stories and games where I’d traveled to the past and future. Presented with the challenge to design an e-commerce website for a time travel tourism company, excited me and I was immediately flooded with ideas.
It was exciting to be able to work on something that currently is not in the market, but it did have its challenges. There was no existing framework to bounce my ideas off of, so I turned to current travel and tourism websites and companies. I made mood boards and organized my ideas into visual displays that would help guide my design decisions. However, my original color scheme, typography choices, and imagery were all clashing once I put them together. Back to the drawing board. I reworked some things - instead of purples, I chose blues, instead of black and white imagery I chose to use color. Theses small changes led to my final design. This showed me that our original ideas don’t always pan out the way we think or hope they will. Experimenting is key.
I spent a significant amount of time working on usability testing and prototyping. Doing so allowed me to really engage with the user and understand any hesistations that came up during the usability test. The Zeit website was successful with my target audience and sparked a lot of interesting discussions. Is time travel a concept that is truly out of reach? With AI and VR technology advancing everyday, is time travel really that far fetched of an idea?
